The Employee Foundation collaborates with the non-profit organisation Habitat for Humanity on building affordable homes around the world.

Renovation works on social centre

In 2026, we will join the renovation of social centre in Slovakia with Habitat for Humanity.
 
VKR Group employees for this programme will help improving the indoor and outdoor conditions for young parents and children from intergenerational poverty. The Employee Foundation covers the costs of VKR volunteers’ travel, hotel, meals, and the volunteering contribution to Habitat for Humanity.  

When: 4-10 October 2026

Where: Dobšiná, Eastern Slovakia

What: The project takes part at a social service center for young parents and children living in intergenerational poverty (Roma community).

Expected tasks include fence installation, slope stabilization, window installation, and minor interior and yard repairs.

Who: 18 volunteers from VKR Group companies

Application deadline: 4 May 2026

Succeeding together

VKR Group employees have participated in volunteering activities in Romania and Poland with great success. In 2026, we will do the same in Slovakia. It is now possible to apply for the 2026 volunteering event.

A special experience

VKR Group employees joining forces
Each year, volunteers from across VKR Group companies come together, bringing with them a mix of languages, cultures, and experiences. What unites them is a shared commitment to helping communities and leaving a lasting, positive mark. Many arrive as strangers but quickly form strong bonds through teamwork and shared purpose.

The work is hands-on and varied—one day might be spent plastering, sanding, and painting; the next, drilling, demolishing, or constructing. Along the way, volunteers hear the stories behind the project and the families who will call these homes their own, deepening their understanding of the impact their efforts will have.

I joined Live a Dream to contribute in a practical, meaningful way. Supporting people in need through hands-on work showed me how powerful simple actions can be.

One moment stood out: working in an old building that would soon become someone’s home. That was when I truly felt the impact.

What an amazing experience with a fantastic group of volunteers from VELUX and DOVISTA. I wasn’t sure what to expect when I arrived – long days and hard work for sure – but I didn’t realize I’d make 20+ new friends! I had no idea working so hard could be so fun.

Requirements and expectations

While there are no artisanal skills or education needed to be part of the project, you need to be able to understand and speak English. It is important that you want to meet and collaborate with new people, and that you would like to be part of both social and work communities. Additionally, you need to be ready to give one week of your holidays and roll up your sleeves and solve the tasks at hand!

FAQs, terms, and how to apply

We do not decide the tasks to be solved or the work to be done, so please be prepared for anything and everything. Protective equipment is provided (glasses, helmet, hearing protection and safety shoes), but not workwear, which you must bring yourself. You must have a valid passport and travel insurance for the duration of the trip. You will receive information about transportation and other practical information well in advance. Additionally, the Employee Foundation will ensure that you receive a programme before you leave. The Employee Foundation will cover cost of travel, hotel, meals, and the volunteering contribution to Habitat for Humanity for the selected volunteers.

All employees can volunteer for Live a Dream.
The Employee Foundation pays all costs, but you need to arrange to take holiday time during the week.
No, we need your commitment for the whole period.

Applications are now open for our upcoming project in Slovakia. The deadline to apply is 4 May 2026.

We select participants based on individual applications and their motivations. While you and other colleagues may apply together, we cannot promise that you will know any of the participants beforehand. Additionally, we believe that part of the experience is based in getting to meet new people from different places.
It is essential that you can understand and speak English well, as not only do we want the volunteers to network, but on a practical note, it is vital that safety briefings and other communications are fully understood.
We partner with Habitat for Humanity to find good volunteering projects. We work with Habitat for Humanity to fund projects in areas that need extra help, and environments that ensure the volunteers have a good experience.
No, we are looking for people in good physical shape with a mindset to work hard for less fortunate people. There are plenty of tasks at the building site that do not require skilled craftsmen, but you need to be open and prepared to do dirty, hard, and repetitive work.
