Mountain shelter and birds observatory, Hatched Egg in the Nest

When the call for Green Areas and Outdoor Life project applications came from the Employee Foundation of the VKR Group, it immediately struck a chord. Here was an opportunity to create something meaningful, something that could bring people closer to nature and promote well-being by encouraging outdoor experiences. Together with architect Ivan Juretić, we responded with enthusiasm and a shared passion for this project believing that it could make a real difference, and followed architect Ivan Juretić’s ambitious idea to create a spectacular shelter for hikers on the long-distance hiking trail Via Adriatica and birdwatchers in the Učka Nature Park, overlooking Kvarner bay, Rijeka and the islands of Cres and Lošinj.

Ivan Juretić’s role as the lead architect and project manager has been instrumental in bringing this dream to life. His pas- sion for mountain huts and shelters, coupled with his infectious enthusiasm, propelled us forward. Ivan is not only a visionary and a free thinker, but also a precise and punctual project manager who kept the project on track from start to finish. His professionalism united our team of volunteers and contributors, creating space for collaboration and mutual commitment to complete this ambitious project on time. The project had educational and artistic component and featured collaboration with biologist and ornithologist Iva Šoštaić from Biom and Kate Foley and School Ballet Ensamble from Vežica.

The end-result – a unique and inspiring structure we call “The Nest” – is a true work of art. Its innovative design, featur- ing a symbolic nest with a hatched egg at its core, serves multiple purposes: it is a safe shelter for mountaineers and a tranquil bird-watching point that blends seamlessly into the natural surroundings. Visitors can find shelter within its walls while enjoying the view of the majestic griffon vultures flying over Učka from the nearby island of Cres, with a spectacular view of the Adriatic Sea. This thoughtful design reflects our intention to create a space that honors and harmonises with nature, offering protection from the elements while encouraging a mindful connection to the landscape.

Since its completion and opening in June 2023, The Nest has become a landmark on Učka mountain, attracting many nature lovers, mountaineers, and bird watchers alike. It is visually striking, but it feels as if it has always been part of the landscape. This project is a testament to the synergy between people and nature, encouraging all who visit to appreciate nature and the benefits it brings to our wellbeing.

There are few projects in life that we can look back on with true pride and fulfilment. For me, The Nest is such a project. It is a true labor of love and a reminder of the powerful impact that a supportive community and a shared vision can have.
