Spaces for comfort and connection
Shelters are designed to make outdoor experiences more accessible and enjoyable—whether for learning, relaxing, exercising, or spending time with family and friends. Created together with NORRØN architects, they are built to be sustainable, practical, and easy to assemble with local materials and volunteer support. Including a shelter in your Reconnect with Nature project can provide an inviting space for communities to gather and enjoy the outdoors.

Shelter FAQs
For the Reconnect with Nature program, you can apply for a project both with or without shelters. If you apply for shelter(s), you should indicate which shelter(s) you would like and describe additional facilities, if any, e.g. establishing a path/trail, trees etc. We will need your rough cost estimate for the additional facilities. We do not have a specific price for the shelters – it very much depends on the local pricing of the wood and prepartion of it.
Depending on the project, you can apply for one or more shelters. You can also apply for more shelters where the project is spread over two or more years.
Yes, you can combine the application with for example planting of trees, a path leading to the shelter(s) etc.
We like to see that employees of the VKR Group are engaged in the project - in cooperation with the local project owner. So we encourage that the shelters are built by employees / project owner under the supervision of a professional craftsman. More information about the time it takes to build the shelters and number of people required will be available after the pilot build in Denmark in May 2025.
Yes.
No. You need to find a craftsman/sawmill who you can trust, and who is able to deliver based on the material that we supply for the shelters.
Then please get in contact with us, and we will have a dialogue about it.
Yes, we will provide a full guide of how to assemble the shelters, including drawings, pictures and videos. These will become available after our test build in May 2025.
Please consult the specifications outlined in the shelter descriptions above on this page.
We strongly recommend that you use the measurements that have been stipulated. If not, we cannot guarantee the stability, and recalculations may need to be made. But please reach out to us with your specific ideas and requirements, and we will try to work it out together.
For the pilot build in May 2025 in Denmark, the wood that will be used is Douglas Pine. But please consult your craftsman with respect to your specific project.
No. According to focus groups prior to design of the shelters, the employees we spoke with focused on shelters that were as basic as possible.
We would prefer that our shelters are used for your project. If for some reason this is not possible or you have a better idea, then please reach out to us.
